What is Halloween?

Halloween is a an annual event or a holiday that is celebrated in the US by involving in activities like costume parties, apple bobbing, discussing scary stories, going to haunted places, involving others in pranks, going for horror movies, and so on. This event is observed throughout the US on October 31 every year. Although a few years ago, it was regarded as only another holiday for children, there has been a considerable increase in the number of participants in Halloween event by adults and children in the past few years.



Halloween, formerly spelled as Holloween, which was a short form of All Hollows Even. All Hollows Even is a day that came before All Saints Day on November 1.

Why do people wear costumes and play tricks on Halloween day?

What is HalloweenInitially, All Saints Day on November 1 and All Souls Day on November 2 was celebrated by acts of going-a-souling and mumming. However, over years, the tradition of mumming took form of wearing different types of costumes, playing tricks, scaring people, and the act of going-a-souling took form of taking cakes and offering chants and prayers for the dead.

British too have many such events. One of the celebrations that hold resemblance to Halloween is Guy Fawkes Night. On this day, or rather night, people burn bonfires, and ask for pennies for the Guy, who had planned the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the king and the English Parliament.

Why people carve Pumpkins on Halloween?

The term ‘Jack O’Lantern’ was first introduced by British, which meant man carrying a lantern. Sometimes, this term was also used to refer to the mysterious lights that were seen flickering on wetlands, usually in folklores and stories.

However, over the years, the term started being used to refer homemade lanterns, which was made cutting out the inner material of the turnip, carving human face on it, and lighting a candle inside it. However, pumpkin carving came to be known to the population of the North American continent after it was introduced by Irish immigrants in the 19th Century. Apple bobbing also started during the same time.
